November 10, 2009; Conshohocken, PA, USA: The annual cyclocross bicycle races in Howard County’s Rockburn Branch Park has become so popular among professional and amateur racers that it has expanded to two days of racing in two different parks this year. The races, which are free to watch for local families and residents, take place on November 21 and 22 at Schooley Mill Park and Rockburn Branch Park. Both events will include food and free kid’s races, as well as hundreds of the fastest off-road bicycle riders in the East.

Cyclocross is a form of off-road bicycle racing that takes place on courses that are shorter and faster than mountain bike race courses, and has often been called the “steeplechase of bicycle racing”. The sport has a devoted following, its own publications and a nationwide web of regional, national and international series. The races in Howard County will be part of one of the most recognizable of those organizations: the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series. One of the characteristics of the sport, which typically takes place in the fall and winter months, is that bad weather doesn’t stop the racers. In fact, the sport originated in the 1920’s when bike racers started taking their racing bikes into the woods so they could periodically get off and run to warm up their frozen feet. Today’s version of the sport includes sand pits, water crossings, and even hurdles that force racers to carry their bikes over portions of the course. Like a horse race, each race day’s event will consist of a number of races for different classes.

Schooley Mill and Rockburn Branch Parks are two of the best parks to watch the races, according to Matt Brancheau who, along with the Howard County Recreation and Parks Department, organizes and promotes the event. “Both parks are fantastic places to have a fall picnic. There is a lot of terrain to challenge the riders, and lots of room to design race tracks to international standards, and we’ve designed them for great spectating. Plus, both courses have playgrounds in the infield and we are constructing separate Kid’s Tracks at both venues. There will be great food and music, and we’ll have an announcer to keep people up-to-date and explain what’s happening in the races.”

Both race days start at 9:00 in the morning and culminate with the Pro-Elite Men’s race starting at 2:30 each day. The races on Saturday, November 21 will take place at Schooley Mill Park, located at 12975 Hall Shop Road, Highland, MD 20777. The races on Sunday, November 22 will take place at Rockburn Branch Park at 6105 Montgomery Road, Elkridge, MD 21075. Admission is free and the races continue regardless of weather.
